Lecture
Batteries are used in a wide range of products and applications. The battery in your mobile phone will have far different specifications than the batteries that may be used to back up the cell phone tower, sub-station or generating station that your phone relies upon.
In this presentation, we will briefly discuss the various types of batteries but will focus on “stationary” batteries – batteries that have a complex discharge load profile.
We’ll start off with battery charging fundamentals, discuss AC & DC breaker interrupting capacity as it relates to battery chargers and then learn methods to add redundancy to create a more reliable battery system.
Speaker Bio:
Art Salander has spent 50+ years in the stationary battery/dc power industry. Among his accomplishments, he has spoken for many industry groups, manufacturer’s, engineering firms and published numerous topical articles related to utility stationary DC systems.
Art has participated in several standards committees including IEEE std 946 and Chaired the Committee which completed IEEE std 2405 replacing NEMA PE5 as the industry standard for stationary/utility battery chargers as of November of 2022. During his career he has been associated with HindlePower, Enersys, SAFT/NIFE, and C&D. Currently, Art Salander provides application engineering and business development for HindlePower, Inc.

There is no cost to attend this meeting, however, if you would like to receive Continuing Education Units (0.2 CEUs/2 PDHs) then payment of a $10 fee is required. We accept electronic payment via Zelle. Zelle is a bank-to-bank transfer mechanism supported by most banks, without a fee, as part of their normal online banking capabilities. There is also a Zelle app available for your smartphone.

As with any electronic payment, watch out for scammers. Scammers have been known to send payment requests to phones, then call you up claiming that your account has been compromised in some way. These scammers pretend to be with your bank and request that you verify your account credentials with them or try to pull money out of your account and ask you to read them the “two-factor authorization code” that will appear on your phone. Do not fall for this social engineering!
