Accurately measuring lithium-ion battery performance is more challenging—and more critical—than it first appears. Small measurement errors can lead to incorrect conclusions about state of charge, health, and long-term reliability.
This presentation takes a practical, engineering-focused look at how key battery parameters are measured, what they really tell you, and where common methods fall short.
Topics include:
• Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and its real-world limitations
• Self-discharge: what it reveals about cell quality
• ACIR vs DCIR: lab measurements vs real operating conditions
• Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) fundamentals
• Capacity measurement and dominant sources of error
• The impact of temperature, relaxation effects, and instrumentation accuracy
We will also explore:
• Why traditional measurement techniques can be misleading
• Faster and more effective methods for identifying weak or abnormal cells
• Practical insights you can apply immediately in design, testing, and evaluation
Whether you're working in product design, manufacturing, or testing, this session will help you better understand what your battery measurements are really telling you—and what they’re not.
Speaker Bio:
Since 1984, Bob Zollo has been with HP, Agilent, and Keysight. His 40+ years of experience spans marketing and R&D for power supplies, analyzers, and test systems. He served as product manager for HP’s first modular power system in 1989 and managed various power and battery test business units.
Currently a solution architect at Keysight, Bob defines the roadmap for power instrumentation and battery testing solutions by analyzing industry trends. He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology.
Notes
There is no cost to attend this meeting, however, if you are a NYS Professional Engineer and would like to receive Professional Development Hours (PDHs) of continuing education credit, then payment of a $15 fee is required. PDHs will be granted based upon actual time of lecture including Q&A. You must stay to the end to receive credit. You will also have to properly fill out an Evaluation Form to prove that you attended this lecture.
