The LICN supports the engineering community and the general public by encouraging the use of consultants meeting the high ethical standards of the IEEE. We educate the general public on the use of consultants as well as help engineers with their consulting practice.
Each month (usually on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm) the LICN holds an online meeting via Zoom where we provide either a technical presentation or a presentation on the business side of having a consulting practice. Our meetings are free and open to the general public.
Most technical presentations are eligible for Professional Development Hour (PDH) credits for Professional Engineers to meet their continuing education requirements. A fee of $15 fee per presentation must be paid for this.
Alternatively, a fee of $100 (quarterly prorated) can be paid to cover all PDH presentations that the LICN gives during the remainder of the year. We call this being a “paid full member” of the LICN. In addition to obtaining PDHs, we toss in a few other perks as well. See How to Become a Member, below.
Objectives of the Network are to:
- Educate the general public and promote the use of consultants
- Assist members in developing their consulting practices by networking inside and outside our organization and by sharing information on matters such as:
- Standards of professional conduct
- Methods for finding new business
- Formats for written agreements
- Liability issues
- Confidentiality agreements
- Patent rights
- Assist our paid full members in promoting their practices by sharing the cost of business promotion through:
- An opportunity to be included in ads in various publications. Cost varies with the publication and the number of participants.
- Listing on the LICN web site.
- Providing Professional Development Hour (PDH) credits for Continuing Education seminars given by the LICN without paying a per presentation PDH fee.
- Assist members in staying current with trends in technology by inviting experts to speak on topics of general interest.
How to Become a Member
To become a paid full member of the LICN you must fill out an application form and pay the $100 fee for the year. This fee helps support our network activities and provide perks for our members. You must also:
- Be a member of the IEEE in good standing (see here to join),
- Abide by the LICN’s Code of Ethics, and
- Be a consultant (either active, retired or have an interest in becoming one)
The LICN Membership Committee will review your application to determine eligibility.
Before making application, please read our Code of Ethics.
We strongly prefer that you apply for membership online. However, in a pinch, you can download the Membership Information Form, fill it out, scan and email it to Officers@licn.org.
We accept electronic payment via Zelle. Zelle is a bank-to-bank transfer mechanism supported by most banks, without a fee, as part of their normal online banking capabilities. There is also a Zelle app available for your smartphone.
When you use Zelle with your bank, it will ask for the following information: 1) the amount to send (enter $100.00), 2) what account you want to pull the money from (select whatever account you want to use), and 3) the phone number or email of the recipient (enter ieeelicn@gmail.com. Don’t worry if you see the name of our Treasurer, David Rost, pop up). If it asks for a memo field, we suggest entering yyyy LICN Fee where yyyy is the year that you are paying for.
An alternative to this is to send a check for $100 payable to IEEE Consultants Network of LI, to our Treasurer, Ed Gellender.
Create a Directory Listing and Skills Matrix Entry
After you have become a full member, we will give you your login information and you can then create a directory listing that will be used for our web site (and potentially other ads and directories).
